spur gear and helical gear

Spur gears and helical gears are two popular types of gearings that keep machines well intentioned. Gears are extremely significant; they enable separate elements of machines to interact in a continuous and productive way. In some ways, gears are the component of an invention that enables it to work properly.

A spur gear is simply a cylindrical shaped body with teeth extending from the sides, mimicking radial spokes. They are straight teeth, which match perfectly with the other spur gears. Whereas for helical gear it also has the appearance of a cylinder, however its teeth are slanted instead. This angle assists with a greater tooth mesh area on slave gears which makes turning them much easier. These gears are designed in a way that when they work together is the best solution.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Helical Gear Compared to Spur Gear

This is one of the primary reasons why spur gears are so great when we want things to move at a uniform rate. If one spur gear turns, the other does too at a rate based on that of single spur gear. Spur gears are found in many common devices such as those used for accurate time keeping e.g. clocks and to help us ride smoothly (i.e. bicycles) On the other hand, helical gears are great when we need things to be sped up or slowed down. Cars as an example, need helical gears to be able accelerate or decelerate properly when driving. Helical gears are useful for factory machines to run at differing speeds to meet different tasks.

Helical gears can also withstand heavier forces, which is a significant advantage. So they are capable of speeding up or slowing down objects without the risk to break them, this making ASIMO and any robots supplied with a similar technology quite dexterous. Among the few disadvantages of helical gears is they tend to be noisier than spur gears. That sounds arise because the tilted teeth are entering contact with one an additional when they rotate, developing more noise. For that reason, while hellcial gears are strong, they may not be the most appropriate option if you want a very quiet system as well.
